In this phase of lockdown, most of us have been spending our time sleeping rather than doing something productive. This lockdown can be used as a tool to build some habits or get rid of some of your bad habits. I have been trying to change my sleeping pattern to get what suits me the best. Well, there is a lot you can experiment with to find out what suits you the best. When it comes to opting for a sleeping habit, there are many things you can try doing to adapt to a sleeping pattern that suits your lifestyle.

Choosing A Sleeping Pattern Which Suits Your Lifestyle

The majority of people sleep at night while others take a part of their day to sleep and do work at night. Well, the truth is you cannot choose a sleeping pattern based on what others do. We have always been told that if we do not sleep at night, it will harm our bodies. It is not entirely true. It’s not the time for when we are sleeping that affects our health but the quality and amount of the sleep that we are having. You need to opt for having a quality sleep. Many people cannot sleep at night due to work, and they invest that time in working and sleeps during the day. While some people only sleep for a few hours at night and rest during the day, that’s also unhealthy.

Amount Of Sleep You Should Have In A Day

According to research, you should have 6 hours of sleep in a day and not more or less than that. You should adapt to the habit of sleeping only for 6 hours. Sleeping, more or less, can cause several health conditions such as dizziness, heart diseases, and an increasing death rate. Also, sleeping for fewer hours gives you a prolonged lifetime. For instance, consider it this way: you are sleeping for 8 hours a day, and that’s 1/3 of your day. There are 24 hours in a day and out of which you spend 8 hours sleeping, this means that you are spending 1/3rd of your life sleeping only and only very few people live for upto 100 years. So according to this, you are living only half of your life. Now, if you opt to sleep for 6 hours, you spend 1/4th of your life sleeping.

What Sleeping Pattern I am Following?

Well, I am following a mixed sleeping pattern, which means my sleeping pattern is not definite. But the amount of time I spend sleeping is definite. I sleep for a total of 6 hours, which means four sleep cycles overall in a day. So what is my sleeping pattern? Well, my sleeping pattern is associated with the lifestyle I live, it is so because my work time is not fixed. As a freelancer, one can never have a fixed schedule or a routine, and that’s why you can have sometimes disrupted your sleeping pattern.

Previously, I used to sleep at night after 11 and wake up at 5 to work. And then I adapted to waking up the whole night and going to sleep at 6 AM. I tried both of them for a few weeks. And yes, both of them proved to be best for my productivity. This is so because I was spending only 6 hours sleeping and having a definite amount of sleep one should have in a day.

Moreover, there was one more sleeping pattern that I adapted to for a few days. With this sleeping pattern, you will need to spend a lot of time making it your habit. In this pattern, your sleep is divided into parts. I made a habit of going to bed at sharp 12 and waked up at 4 AM to start my day. Now you might be thinking about how why I was sleeping for less than 6 hours myself? Well, I completed the rest two hours between my work schedule, which I developed during that time. I was adapted to sleeping for only 4 hours, and the rest two hours I completed in two naps, so that makes a total of 6 hours.

What Sleeping Pattern To Follow?

So why did I not tried this sleeping pattern for a longer period? It is so because of this sleeping pattern that I started feeling tired and sleepy until I reached my nap time. When I woke up at 4 AM after 4 hours of sleep, I started feeling dizzy and unable to work.

You should never opt to follow a sleeping pattern that other people follow. Decide it based on what your lifestyle is. For instance, if you work at night, then adapt to sleeping during the day. It is also essential to follow a vital sleeping routine to get a good night’s sleep.
